Body

The history of the town, located 65 kilometres from the Ukrainian-Polish border, dates back to the second half of the 14th century, when the north-western outskirts of Volyn were in the hands of duke Fedir Olgerdovych's eldest son Sanguszko Fedkovych, who had the title of Duke of Ratno and Kovel. Duke Mykhailo, Sanguszko’s son, made the next owner of the settlement on the Turia river.

It is Duke Vasyl Sanguszko that has taken the most prominent place in the growth of Kovel. It was during his reign in 1518 that a charter was issued by King Sigismund I of Poland. The charter allowed building a town on the site of the village of Kowle. It also received the Magdeburg right, which gave a privilege to hold two fairs a year - on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and on the fourth day of Christmas.

The famous representative of the Sanguszko family built a strong castle in Kovel to secure his family possessions. Due to long conflicts with neighbours, Duke Vasyl Mykhailovych Sanguzhko-Kovelskyi in 1543 accepted the offer of King Sigismund's wife to exchange their belongings. In 1543 a transaction was concluded in Krakow. According to it, Vasyl Sanguszko-Kovelskyi transferred his rights for Kovel to Queen Bonnie, instead receiving the estate elsewhere. The era of the Sanguszko dukes in Kovel had been over. The Kovel Castle had got new owners.

We do not know how that building looked like. Regretfully, no trace of it has been preserved to this day.
