The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a monument of sacred architecture of the 12th century, a majestic and perfect building. It was built in 1156-1160 by Prince Mstyslav Iziaslavovych, later Grand Prince of Kyiv. This is the only church in Volyn region that has been preserved until the now from the times of Kyivan Rus’. The magnificent architectural ensemble includes the temple, the bell tower and the Bishop's House.
The cathedral served as the resting place for Volyn dukes and bishops. The activities of the Sanguszko dukes are also linked with this shrine. The Elder of Lutsk Andrii Mykhailovych (died in 1560) and his son Oleksandr (died in 1565) are buried in the Assumption Cathedral in Volodymyr.
During its almost thousand-year history, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has experienced a lot – it was destroyed by the Tatars and fires, decorated with gold and shot with cannons. In different periods it served as a place of worship and was used as a warehouse. Periods of prosperity were replaced by years of desolation and destruction. However, this holy place has survived hard times and maintained its grandeur.
